Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005

The Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, is a landmark legislation in India that empowers citizens to access information from public authorities. This Act is designed to promote transparency, accountability, and good governance in the functioning of public institutions. It ensures that the citizens of India have the right to access records, documents, and information held by government departments, institutions, and organizations.

Under the RTI Act, any Indian citizen can file a request to seek information from public authorities. The authorities are mandated to respond to the RTI request within 30 days. If the information is not provided or if the request is rejected, the applicant has the right to file an appeal. In case the appeal is also denied, the citizen can escalate the matter to the Information Commission, which has the authority to enforce the disclosure of information.

The Act also lays down the penalties for public officials who fail to comply with the provisions of the Act. It has been instrumental in enhancing the transparency of the government, empowering people to actively participate in the democratic process, and holding public authorities accountable for their actions.
